Outcomes

Outcome 1: To plan, implement, and evaluate a program to address issues of health, athletics, or recreation. Will include a written justification/reflection as to why the selected items meet this competency. This came from Texas A&M Commerce – HHPS 525 spring 2025 SWOT Analysis.  The Strategic Marketing Case presented a Fan Cost Index evaluating the impact of costs for an average family seeking live game attendance at the following sporting events: MLB, NBA, NLH, and NFL. Organizational analysis was provided evaluating specific costs: ticket prices, concessions, parking, and souvenirs. A SWOT analysis was performed in addition to specific target goals aimed at resolving obstacles/issues. Finally, marketing tactics were included. This artifact serves to demonstrate the adequate evaluation of sporting events income generation and provide solutions that allow for greater revenue.

Strategic Marketing Case from Mktng and Pub Relat in Sports (HHPS-525-01W, HHPS-525-CRW) spring 2025. The SWOT Analysis provided Montgomery Lake Creek High School’s athletic department with research allowing for greater insight into the ways in which they are excelling and opportunities for growth and improvement. At the end of the SWOT presentation, practical recommendations are included highlighting recommendations which will allow for improvement.

Both assignments provided me with the experience needed to present an adequate professional analysis which can be utilized in my role as Athletic Director.

Outcome 2: To critically analyze research related to health and human performance. This came from Texas A&M University-Commerce HHPS-520 summer 1 of 2025 document Youth sports. Article 5 Review discusses the unique challenges faced by Muslim student athletes who participate in the fast of Ramadan. Ramadan is considered a “holy month” for the Islamic community where individuals refrain from eating and drinking from dawn until sunset with the goal of bringing them closer to God. Student athletes felt that their athletic trainers lacked the adequate knowledge of Ramdan that is needed to support them properly.  The article provides insight into the challenges faced by Muslim student athlete observing Ramadan and ways that coaches and the athletic department can best support them.

Article #5 from Texas A&M Commerce University Sociology of Sport and Physical Activity HHPS-535 fall 2024. he Youth Sports article examined areas of concern facing today’s youth: premature injuries from overuse and early sport specialization, the cost of youth sports and exclusion of access to those in low-income areas, and the youth health crisis. Not only are injuries skyrocketing due to early sport specialization and over-training, but participation in sports is quickly becoming a luxury only accessible to those with higher socioeconomic status. With the exclusion of lower income families, childhood health is in jeopardy.

Both articles allow insight into relevant factors facing human health and performance in sports today. As an Athletic Director it is vital that I have an understanding of diverse backgrounds including religious observance such as Ramadan. It is also important to understand that changes that have occurred in youth sports relating to overuse injury, limited access to sports play, and the greater societal implications on health. To meet the needs of both areas will require critical thinking and hard work.

Outcome 3: To identify a question, investigate the problem, and draw relevant conclusions about a current issue within their concentration. This came from Texas A&M University-Commerce HHPS-520 summer I of 2025 Governance and Ethics in Sport Trans Debate The artifacts included discuss two heavily debated controversial “problems” in sports today: 1) fair competition with trans-female athletes, and 2) the corporate takeover on youth sports. The article, Trans Debate highlights both sides of the argument with my personal resolution which seeks to provide clarity, fairness, and protection of the rights of both trans-female athletes and those assigned female at birth. The article The Cost to Play highlights the issue of large sports corporations eliminating free community sport centers and some resolution tactics currently being implemented. Both assignments required higher level thinking and a foundational understanding of hot topics in the sports industry. Having thoroughly researched both topics I am confident that in my role as Athletic Director I will be able to speak on these sensitive topics with ease and an informed background.

Cost to Play from Soc of Sport & Phys Activity (HHPS-535-01W) fall 2024. An introduction to the class in which the artifacts was completed. Please specify the course number, title, and semester of enrollment. An explanation of the artifacts. If it is a group assignment, an explanation of why it was selected to be included in your personal portfolio and detail your specific contribution. An explanation of how the artifacts meet the competency An explanation of what you learned from writing the artifacts and how this is applicable to your current/future career.

Outcome 4: To understand motivational theories that impact health and human performance. This came from Texas A&M Commerce University Sport Psychology HHPK 528-01W fall 2024
Optimizing peak performance. The article Optimizing peak performance was an article review which examined principles of sport psychology related to prime performance, showcased common current misconceptions, and provided insight into resolutions for providing correct instruction/training to athletes related to psychological skills training and peak performance goals. The article highlighted the impact of athlete motivation and psychological mindset on peak performance.

Journal #1 from Texas A&M University-Commerce HHPS-584 Summer II 2025 Administration in Sport and Recreation Programs. Journal #1 similarly provided three article summaries related to understanding athlete motivation and related psychological factors. These assignments will allow me to implement programs in my athletic department that foster enhanced motivation among both student athletes and coaching staff.

Outcome 5: To identify and exhibit the management and administrative skills necessary for athletic programs. This came from Texas A&M University-Commerce HHPS-584 Summer II 2025 Administration in Sport and Recreation Programs Response paper 1. Response paper #1 discussed organizational theory and the difference between a rational and open approach to running an organization.

Sport Marketing Interview from Texas A&M University-Commerce Marketing and Public Relations in Sports HHPS-525-01W, spring 2025. The Sport Marketing Interview assignment was an interview with an Athletic Director that I had the chance to speak with by phone. Both assignments provide helpful tips on how I can model my own organization/institution. I prefer to run an organization with a combination of both rational and open modalities. I learned a lot from the Athletic Director that I interviewed, some of which was an example of how differently I would approach and handle situations that he referenced.
Final Reflection:

One of the greatest achievements one can strive for is to leave a legacy that not only inspires the next generation, but one that propels them to live a life marked by audacious bravery, honorable character, and relentless motivation to achieve academic and athletic success. Through the learning modules, research papers, and interactive learning experiences presented to me at Texas A&M Commerce I now have the vehicle of education which will allow me to utilize creativity and research methodology to positively impact an institution and the young people for which it serves.

My background in Health Science, personal athletic achievement as a decathlete at Sam Houston State University, and my experience working in the public school system and athletics department have laid a great foundation for understanding on kinetic body movements. However, this education is incomplete without the graduate level knowledge provided at Texas A&M Commerce.

A summation of the intellect gained at this University is difficult to condense as the myriad number of skills and knowledge gained has surpassed expectation. I have gained insight into the methodology, strategy, and analyses needed when running an effective organization as well as the importance of sports sponsorships and forming mutually benefiting relationships with the community. Through many of my master’s level courses I have prepared Strength Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analyses to gauge obstacles and benefits of an organization. The ability to create and present this type of analysis is crucial for an Athletic Director whose decisions will hold heavy impact to not only the department, but the institution as a whole.

Marketing strategies that utilize social media and brand sponsor affiliation will help my institution form relationships that benefit both parties and can last for many years to come. In my previous role I have formed partnering relationships with local dental offices to provide educational access for student observation programs. Being comfortable to prepare a presentation and initiate a partnership like this is a result of the Texas A&M Commerce program.

Awareness of diversity in demographic and religious backgrounds will allow me to implement policies that protect at risk student athletes and foster an inclusive athletics department. From an ethical and moral standpoint it is important to be empathetic to the struggles and needs of athletes, coaches, and other staff in order to foster a healthy work environment. Further, understanding psychological factors influencing motivation and organization design is crucial to running an effective institution.

I have gained insight into the cost epidemic of sports in current culture and the grave difficulty that communities have with regards to child access to sports with the corporate sport take over. In addition, the increase in injury incidence among minors. This information is valuable and imperative when working at an athletic institution that seeks to protect the young athletes in its care.

Being trained on the laws which govern athletics including Title IX and the recent changes to Name Image Likeness allowance has provided an enriched background on some of the contentious discussions felt by sports organizations today. Expertise has been achieved in my ability to understand and digest peer reviewed research and to not only relate this to my field, but to provide an extensive literature review which can be utilized to ascertain the consensus of relevant research. Understanding research modalities through statistics and methods have proved to be essential tools when designing my own research study related to my profession. Finally being able to compile everything into an attractive poster presentation or powerpoint has real time benefit in my current role.

It is impossible to include every detail of knowledge gained from this institution. As I step into my next role as Athletic Director I am confident that the profound knowledge and expertise gained will open doors greater than I could imagine. I am grateful for the attentive faculty and academic advisors that have worked effortlessly to provide me with quality education. Mohammed Ali once said, "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth." My life’s mission is to serve an athletic department to the best of my ability and I am confident with the skills gained at this University I will make an impact felt by many.
